New Zealand offers a great deal to adults as a holiday destination, the driving alone brings something new around every turn in the road. That said New Zealand is a children’s haven too, Plan your journey to ensure that driving distances are not to long, allow plenty of stops along the way, beaches, playgrounds, parks, and activities that children enjoy are easy to find.
Most campervan parks throughout the country offer children’s play areas and some have swimming pools, as do towns along the way.
Supermarkets in New Zealand will have most foods that your children are used to from home.
Age and or height restrictions do apply at some of the adventure tourism tours, and on certain boat trips.
Sunscreen and a hat are essentials; a few hours spent outdoors can quickly ruin a holiday without the correct protection from the suns harmful rays. As we say here in New Zealand, Slip, Slop, Slap (Slip on a t-shirt, slop on sun cream, slap on a hat.)
Insect repellent will be required to protect against sand flies in the South Island, as well as the North Island. This is readily available at supermarkets and pharmacies.
Life on the road in an Iconic Motor Home is a great adventure for children; the onboard facilities will make travel so easy. Stop often to allow them to let off steam and everyone will be happy.
Plan longer drives around nap times, or after an activity has worn them out if possible.
Bring along a few essential first aid items, and any medicines that your children are used to. The New Zealand equivalent may not taste the same.
Don’t forget a favourite cuddly toy and a couple of books for bedtime. The onboard movie system has a good selection of children’s favourites. If bringing along a favourite DVD check it is “region free” or “region 4”.
If arriving into New Zealand on a flight in excess of 5 hours, it is advisable to overnight in a hotel prior to collecting your motorhome. Paperwork and show through’s, are not entertaining to overtired children or stressed parents. Start out on your camping adventure with everyone excited.
Build your child’s enthusiasm by involving them as much as possible in the planning of your trip from the very beginning - where to go, what to eat, what to pack etc.
Include activities the whole family will enjoy, hiking, swimming, bike and horse riding etc.
If it’s your first motor home adventure, plan to stay at camp grounds with all the amenities. This will keep the first trip positive and build enthusiasm for future trips away in a campervan. Most also have laundry and drying facilities, to help keep the luggage to a minimum.
Stock the fridge with plenty of fruit, healthy snacks and drinks. Driving distances between supermarkets and cafes can be long.
Once you have collected your motorhome, first stop will probably be at the supermarket, so then choose a campground nearby. Kids will be excited to start exploring and you have time to unpack and unwind.
Please be advised that travel cots do not fit in our vehicles. For small babies we do have the pop up bubble available for hire, this will fit easily on to the lounge seating, and will prevent baby from rolling out of bed. It comes equipped with a baby pillow, duvet, fleece blanket and sheets. Toddlers can sleep safely on the bed with a strategically placed pillow or cushion. Children up to three will be provided with a baby pillow, cot size duvet, fleece blanket, and sheets. Older children will be provided with a single duvet, sheet and pillow.
Make sure the kids are buckled in safely.
All children aged 5 years and under require a car seat. The Voyager or Kontiki motorhomes are the ideal choice for travelling with children. Children face forward, and are not to far from mum and dad. We do have booster car seats for older children too if required.
Enlist the kids’ help with some of the motor home chores - this helps them to feel they are really involved in the whole adventure.
Don’t make the mistake of over planning your trip, generally 4-5 hours travelling in the motor home each day is going to be as much as children and parents can handle. Accept that itineraries can break down, if one of the party is not feeling to well.
Stop often, preferably every 2 to 3 hours, children need to get outside often and run around a bit, stretch the legs and of course use the toilet!!
Get to the campground well before dark so the kids can run around and get familiar with their surroundings, and burn off some of that excess energy.
If possible, schedule longer driving times around nap times, when the children are more likely to sleep - this can offer some peaceful driving time.
Keep a rubbish bag handy for any quick emergency situations, along with a pack of wet wipes.
Give each child a space inside the campervan to store belongings. This will make them feel more at home and will keep your motorhome less cluttered.
Create a travel diary together with your children of your motorhome holiday. Collect along the way brochures of places you have visited, keep ticket stubs, and add these to photos back home to create a wonderful memento of New Zealand.
