New Zealand Classic Tourist Route Itinerary

30-40 Day 2 Island Route

This itinerary incorporates both the North and South Islands of New Zealand. The arrival point of this itinerary is your choice between Auckland or Christchurch, as the route can be reversed easily.

Start Auckland: From here, travel north to the 'winterless' Northland region including the Bay of Islands. Return back south toward Auckland and stop in to the rural picturesque Warkworth/Matakana region along the way.

Next on to Rotorua the thermally active centre of the North island.  Also home to some of the best Moari cultural tours. Taupo, home to NZ's largest lake is a relaxing town, nice restaurants on the lakeside, fishing trips, scenic walks and home of the Haka Falls. Continuing through the Central Plateau region and the Tongariro National Park where you can visit Mt Ruapehu, see the rural towns along the way, where life has not been tooo changed for many years.  A warm welcome is assured at the local markets . Travel from here onto the Manawatu/Horowhenua district followed by  the capital city of Wellington which is well worth a couple of nights stay.  The Te Papa Musuem is a must, and can alone take a day to enjoy all the interesting exhibits.. From there you can  take the 3 hour journey on the Interislander or Bluebridge Ferry through the Marlborough Sounds to the South Island port of Picton. .

Picton is a small freindly town, with all manner of boats in the small harbour. From here  head along to stunning Queen Charlotte Drive towards Nelson, with the beautiful Marlbourough Sounds acting as a glorious backdrop to a warm welcome to the South Island. The Nelson region is very arty, and you can include more lovely scenery than you thought possible. a visit to the AbleTasman National Park offers walking cycling, flora and fauna only found in this area of the country. Travel on down to the West Coast which incorporates Westport, Punakaki, Greymouth, Hokitika and Franz Josef & Fox Glaciers. With the wild west rugged coastline, and the steep towering glaciers, big forests filled with birds, lets hope for good weather, as the West Coast is the renowned for being the wettest region of New Zealand. This route then continues on to Wanaka/Lake Hawea and the Queenstown/Southern Lakes District. Then incorporates Central Otago, Southland, Dunedin, Oamaru, and finishes in the Canterbury region where both national and international flights are available from the recently refurbished Christchurch Airport.

 

Christchurch Return Itinerary

Recommend a minimum of 14 days to complete this New Zealand itinerary

This itinerary incorporates the lower South Island of New Zealand. The arrival point of this itinerary is Christchurch where you can pick up your Iconic Motor Home. The Canterbury region is one of the only places in the world where, within two hours of an international airport, you can ski at a world class alpine resort, play golf, bungy jump, go rafting, mountain bike, wind surf, whale watch and visit world-class vineyards and gardens.

From here head inland to Lake Tekapo in the stunning MacKenzie Country for star gazing, onto  Aoraki Mt Cook, NZ's highest peak and on too Queenstown/Southern Lakes District. Queenstown is the adventure capital of the world and offers a variety of things to do for both adrenalin seekers and travellers of all ages.

Next stop Wanaka/Lake Hawea where many activities are on offer, including fly fishing for brown trout. This itinerary then takes you to Central Otago, world famous for it's Pinot Noir which is followed by world famous Fiordland area. From here travel down to the Southland region taking in Invercargill and the Southern Scenic Route, then on to the historic city of Dunedin, before returning to Christchurch

South Island NZ Scenic Itinerary Route Itinerary

Recommend a minimum of 10 days to complete this New Zealand itinerary

This itinerary incorporates the upper South Island of New Zealand. The arrival point of this itinerary is Christchurch where you can pick up your Iconic Motor Home. From here travel on to the village of Hanmer Springs, New Zealand’s premier alpine and spa destination. Next stop is Kaikoura, famous for it's crayfish (rock lobster), wildlife and whale watching tours.

Travel up the east coast to the Marlborough wine region, home to the Marlborough Food & Wine Festival, NZ's longest running and most popular wine festival.  From here head along to the Nelson/Tasman region where you can include the Abel Tasman National Park in your trip. Next travel down to wild Glacier Country which incorporates Franz Josef & Fox Glaciers.

This route finishes by returning to the Canterbury region where both national and international flights are available from the recently refurbished Christchurch Airport.

Auckland Return Tour Itinerary


Recommend minimum of 7 days to complete this New Zealand itinerary

This itinerary incorporates only the North Island of New Zealand. The arrival point of this itinerary is Auckland where you can pick up Iconic Motor Home. From here, take a scenic drive through NZ countryside to the Coromandel Peninsula which features stunning beaches and rainforests, and is known for it's eco tourism. This touring route then takes in sub tropical the Bay of Plenty area on the East Coast of the North Island. Tauranga, Mt Maunganui, Whakatane and the active volcano White Island are popular tourist destinations in this region. Not far away is Taupo, the home of the great Lake Taupo, New Zealand's largest lake. Visitors are attracted to this region for the scenery, some of the best trout fishing in the world, and action-packed adventure. Finally return to Auckland to complete this itinerary. 


Auckland Northland Tourist Route Itinerary


Recommend a minimum of 14 days to complete this New Zealand itinerary

This itinerary incorporates the top of the North Island of New Zealand. The arrival point of this itinerary is Auckland where you can pick up your Iconic Motor Home. From here, travel north to the Warkworth/Matakana region. Warkworth is just an hour’s drive from Auckland and a world away in terms of character and pace. It is also the gateway to the Matakana Coast Wine Country, one of the most desirable places to visit in New Zealand. Vineyards, local markets, iconic beaches and islands, marine reserves and wildlife sanctuaries are all within a short distance of Warkworth village.

Next, head north to 'winterless' Northland and on to the Bay of Islands. This sub tropical region is most popular for it's big game fishing, sailing, scenic cruises, sightseeing and wildlife tours. Waitangi is the birthplace of the nation and is signifigant to Maori and European history. Heading further north will take you to the Far North region, and to the northernmost tip of New Zealand, Cape Reinga. Not far from here you can visit 90 Mile Beach and the Te Paki sand dunes.

Returning south, your next stop is the city of Whangarei, with the idyllic holiday destination of Whangarei Heads not far away.

Finally return to Auckland to complete this itinerary.  Auckland International Airport caters for both domestic and international travellers.
